Talk show host extraordinaire Ellen DeGeneres married her Australian bride, actress Portia de Rossi, in August 2008 after being together since 2005. On their ninth anniversary last year, Ellen posted a wedding pic on Instagram and said, “Being her wife is the greatest thing I am.” In an interview with People she gushed, “I can’t imagine not being married. I have my best friend, the person I want to spend time with more than anybody else in the world.”

We first got to know and love him as Doogie Howser, MD and Neil Patrick Harris went on to become one of the world’s most-loved entertainers. In 2014 he married Broadway star-turned-chef David Burtka after 10 years together. The couple are the proud parents of 7-year-old twins Harper and Gideon. “The adventures have never ceased. The love has never waned. The gifts are never ending,” wrote Harris on the 13th anniversary of getting together with Burtka.

Sir Elton John and David Furnish

Fame doesn’t come much more famous than musician Sir Elton John and when he married long-time love David Furnish they immediately become one of the world’s most famous married gay couples. The couple have been together since 1993 and entered a civil union in 2005. When same-sex marriage became legal in the UK, they got married on the 9th anniversary of their union, in December 2014, at a celebrity-studded ceremony in Windsor. John and Furnish have two sons – Zachary and Elijah. They’re also known jewellery aficionados with Shamballa Jewels and Loree Rodkin among their favourites – both available through Fairfax & Roberts.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Justin Mikita

As one half of Mitch and Cam on Modern Family, Jesse Tyler Ferguson brought a modern gay couple to the small screen. In real life, he became one half of a famous married gay couple when he wed lawyer Justin Mikita in New York in 2012. On choosing a venue for the wedding he told Ellen, “I would think ‘what would my mom think of this place?’ and then I would ask, ‘what would Sophia Vergara think of this place?’” It was a sweltering day and, naturally, he wanted everything to be perfect – “I felt like I was on the brink of insanity!”

Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli

After meeting in 2012 on the set of hit show Orange is the New Black, Samira and Lauren were married in 2017 in Palm Springs in a ceremony that included 6kg of confetti. When they first met, Lauren was married to a man and she and Samira became firm, platonic friends. “Samira became the person I felt safe talking to,” Lauren told Martha Stewart Weddings of the period when she was questioning her sexuality. “I was so confused, and it was such a scary time that I think our romance came out of me leaning on her when it felt like my life was falling apart.” Their wedding ceremony was performed by Samira’s Baptist minister parents, just as she had always dreamed.

As one of America’s darling famous married gay couples, Lance and Michael tied the knot in a TV special called Lance loves Michael: The Lance Bass Wedding. Lance and Michael enjoyed a joint bachelor party and recited their self-written vows on the steps of New York’s Park Plaza Hotel.

Ricky Martin and Jwan Yosef

The Puerto Rican megastar proposed to Swedish artist Jwan Yosef in 2016 by giving him a ring and saying, “I want to spend my life with you. Will you marry me?”. The pair revealed in January that they are now married. “We’ve exchanged vows and we swear everything and we signed all the papers that we needed to sign. Prenups and everything,” said Ricky. “I’m a husband, but we are doing a heavy party in a couple of months.” Married life “feels amazing.” Ricky already has twin boys, but has said he’d love to have more children. “We’re a modern family, and I think people need to see [that], and I want to normalise the beauty of our family.”
