Why Coloured Gemstones Are Shining Timelessly

02 December 2025

Coloured gemstones are experiencing a remarkable rise in popularity in 2025, transforming the way clients think about fine jewellery, personal expression and long-term value. From shifting consumer preferences to growing investment interest, several powerful forces are placing these vibrant jewels firmly in the spotlight.

The Australian Financial Review recently covered this same topic and quoted our CEO Joshua Rogers, “This colour comeback, isn’t simply down to inflation, we have seen a significant decrease in the price of both natural and lab-grown diamonds, where natural, coloured gemstones have all increased,” he says. Rubies, sapphires and emeralds have increased in price tremendously, and rare stones like pigeon blood rubies and royal blue sapphires have doubled in price in 24 months. There’s greater demand, too for gems such as tourmalines, topaz and aquamarine. High-quality material is becoming harder to find, and consumers are increasingly more interested in owning these gems not only as beautiful, wearable jewellery pieces but also as alternative investment classes, driving up demand.”

A Shift Toward Natural Beauty

The rapid emergence of lab-grown diamonds has reshaped the diamond market, offering new possibilities but also introducing uncertainty for some buyers—particularly around long-term value and authenticity. As a result, many clients are choosing coloured gemstones for their natural origins, rarity and unique character.

Unlike diamonds, coloured gemstones cannot be created in a lab, which gives them an inherent authenticity that resonates strongly with today’s discerning collectors. Each stone is a true product of nature, formed over millions of years, with colours and inclusions that can never be replicated.

A Desire for Individuality

Self-expression is taking centre stage in luxury. More clients are seeking pieces that feel personal, jewellery that is distinctive, rare and rich in story. Coloured gemstones offer exactly this: no two stones are ever the same, and their hues create a powerful emotional connection that many find irresistible.

Whether choosing a vivid emerald, a velvety blue sapphire or an electric Paraíba tourmaline, clients are drawn to jewels that reflect their personality and style.

Growing Investment Appeal

Beyond their beauty, coloured gemstones are increasingly seen as a reliable store of value. Exceptional rubies, emeralds and sapphires, often referred to as the “big three” have experienced significant price growth over the past decade, a trend driven by scarcity and global demand.

Red remains one of the rarest colours in the gemstone world, which is evident in the price trajectory of fine rubies.

Natural coloured diamonds share this investment appeal and are among the most rare and coveted stones on earth.

The Rise of New Collector Favourites

While the classics remain highly prized, several gemstones are emerging as rising stars within the world of high jewellery:

  • Paraíba tourmaline – celebrated for its otherworldly neon blues and greens
  • Zircon – prized for its brilliance and often mistaken (incorrectly) for cubic zirconia
  • Spinel – enjoying renewed appreciation, especially in rich reds, pinks, blues and greys
  • Australian sapphire – beloved locally for its deep blues and distinctive teal tones

As awareness of these gems grows, so too does their desirability and value.

Coloured Gemstones at Fairfax & Roberts

Coloured gemstones are woven into the heritage of Fairfax & Roberts. Each year, our team travels to work directly with expert stone-cutters—some from families who have perfected their craft over generations—to source exceptional gemstones with superior colour, clarity and cut. These rare finds become the inspiration behind our bespoke high jewellery creations.

Our latest creation, the Aurora Necklace, exemplifies the artistry and rarity of coloured gemstone craftsmanship. At its centre lies a remarkable 15 ct sugarloaf emerald, sourced from an eighth-generation cutter family. The gem was one of a perfectly matched pair, the companion stone now featured in an extraordinary cocktail ring.

Matched pairs of this calibre are incredibly rare, and sourcing another set of this quality would be almost impossible. Their rarity, story and craftsmanship are what make these jewels so exceptional.
