Caring for your Engagement Ring

All You Need to Know

Imbued with meaning and personal history, an engagement ring tells a beautiful story – a public symbol of the commitment you and your beloved have decided to make.

From the moment you received your engagement ring, you probably were not thinking about jewellery maintenance. However, your engagement ring (as well as other jewellery pieces) need to be cared for and cleaned regularly to make sure they continue to sparkle and shine like the day you first received them.

Simple everyday actions can take their toll on your jewellery, especially pieces that are constantly worn like an engagement ring and wedding band. Inevitably, dirt will start to build up over time and your jewellery will start to lose its original lustre. Paying attention to jewellery maintenance will reward your jewellery pieces so they look as good as they did the first time you wore them and will ensure your stones are safe and secure.

IMPORTANT JEWELLERY CARE TIPS

We have outlined the most important care tips to ensure your engagement ring, wedding bands and all jewellery pieces stay in pristine condition.

  • Avoid wearing your jewellery whilst showering, exercising, or swimming in the ocean or pool. Simple actions such as lifting weights or entering and exiting the pool can apply pressure on your rings causing deformation of the band, scratches, and dents. Additionally, sweat and chlorine chemicals can erode the metal and gemstones over time resulting in lacklustre jewellery.
  • Avoid direct contact with perfumes and makeup. The product can easily build up within the structural elements of the jewellery preventing light to filter through the diamonds and gemstones reducing their natural sparkle. This is particularly true with pearls, where chemicals in these products will eat away at the organic structure.
  • Avoid wearing your jewellery whilst at home particularly when cleaning and moving heavy furniture. Heavy pressure on precious metals and gemstones can deform your jewellery and cause some structural damage.
  • Avoid sleeping in chains, rings, bracelets and earrings. The abrasion caused by movement throughout the night can cause damage to delicate chains, claws and fine detailing. It can also lead to chain knotting.
  • When you are not wearing your jewellery, store each piece in a soft jewellery pouch or jewellery box to stop diamonds from rubbing against your other jewellery pieces as diamonds will scratch other gemstones and metal.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR JEWELLERY AT HOME

To clean your jewellery at home in between professional cleaning services, follow these simple steps:

  • Rinse your jewellery under lukewarm water to remove any surface dirt and chemical residue from the hand sanitiser and oils.
  • For diamond, sapphire and ruby gemstone pieces, lightly spray the piece with a mild window spray (such as Windex). Opal, emerald, tanzanite, pearls and turquoise pieces, must only be cleaned professionally by a highly skilled jeweller.
  • Lightly brush the jewellery with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Thoroughly but carefully rinse the jewellery with lukewarm water.
  • Gently pat the jewellery dry with a soft, plush towel and allow to completely dry before re-wearing.
