We still talk about a ”gold standard” and many countries’ governments hoard it by the tonne, but in recent decades yellow gold jewellery has been out of favour in the Western world. Platinum became popular during the Edwardian era and through the Art Deco years until WWII. Interestingly, there was a spike in its popularity after the sinking of the Titanic, when black and white mourning jewellery was in vogue. Yellow gold regained popularity in the 1950s as platinum was scarce after the war and then, after another decade in the spotlight during the 80s, it disappeared from many jewellery boxes. However, yellow gold engagement rings have recently been making a comeback with celebrities including Halle Berry, Lauren Conrad, Sarah Jessica Parker and Jennifer Aniston all wearing gorgeous yellow gold rings. It’s also been making an appearance on the red carpets during awards season with stars like Maggie Gyllenhaal rocking both the vintage and gold trend with gold earrings and a gorgeous 1940s gold ring featuring peridots and diamonds.
