While diamonds are officially the birthstone of those lucky enough to be born in April, their symbolic meanings of love, eternity, strength and everlasting affection have contributed to their popularity in engagement rings and wedding bands.
Anatomy aside, diamonds make every woman’s hand look fabulous no matter which finger she wears them on
The First Diamonds
The first diamonds were thought to have been mined in India, around 6000 years ago and their name comes from the Greek word for ‘unbreakable’. Legend has it that women wear their engagement ring on the third finger of their left hand as ancient Egyptians believed that the ‘vena amoris’ (the vein of love) ran directly from the heart to the tip of that finger. A nice idea, but actually all our fingers have a similar vein structure. Anatomy aside, diamonds make every woman’s hand look fabulous no matter which finger she wears them on, or whether she was born in April, or even if she’s engaged. Colourless diamonds are the most common variant when we think of this popular gem but this most precious of stones also comes in yellow, red, pink, blue and green – a rainbow of options for a loved one born in April. Or one who is loved in April. Or anyone who loves beautiful jewellery! Learn more about gemstones in our jewellery and gemstone buying resources.
